The lonely headstone of Edmund D. Gleeson stands watch from the top of Egypt Mound. Author’s collection.

All that remains on the original cemetery site is the headstone for Edmund Gleeson, six sandstone posts and a small, stone-lined area that once held the remains of those who were buried there. Though Edmund Richardson Gleeson’s name still appears on the same stone as his uncles, his remains were relocated to Bedford Cemetery with the rest of his family. Rebecca Gleeson’s grave, though still on this site, is unmarked.

When visiting this site, it’s best to park at the golf course on the west side of Dunham Road near Tinkers Creek Road. From there, carefully cross the road and proceed south on Dunham Road until the hill to your left is nearly even with the verge of the road. Just before a fire hydrant, a small trail leads to your left and into the woods. You will soon see scattered bricks on the forest floor. These are the ruins of the World’s End Tavern. Continue to follow this broken trail to the north and east and keep walking until you reach the highest point of land in the area. There, you will discover all that remains of the Gleeson Homestead Cemetery.

Please use extreme caution when visiting this site. The terrain might be difficult for some to manage. Furthermore, you will have to fight through many thickets of pricker bushes to reach your destination.
